You can practise alone by answering aloud, recording yourself and repeating one specific improvement. A partner is useful, but you can start today with a timer, a question and a quiet place.
IELTSpeaking's public question pages include free recording and playback without an account. This does not include an AI band score. Full realtime web mocks require Apple sign-in and an active Pro membership.
A 20-minute daily routine
Try an answer before reading the model. Keep the first recording even if you hesitate; otherwise you lose the evidence you need to review.
- Minutes 1–4: answer three familiar Part 1 questions without a script.
- Minutes 5–7: prepare a Part 2 cue card for one minute, then speak for up to two minutes.
- Minutes 8–11: answer two related Part 3 questions with a reason and an example.
- Minutes 12–16: listen back, check a short transcript and identify one repeated problem.
- Minutes 17–20: re-record the weakest answer, then try a fresh question using the same skill.
Review the recording with a specific question
Listen once for whether your answer addresses the question and develops an idea. Listen again for one criterion: a pause that breaks the message, a repeated word, a grammar pattern or a phrase that is hard to understand.
A transcript can help you inspect grammar and vocabulary. It cannot prove pronunciation or rhythm. Speech recognition may confuse work and walk because of the recording or the recogniser as well as your speech; check the audio before treating that as a pronunciation error.
Use shadowing for a clear purpose
Choose a short clip with a transcript. Listen, mark stressed words, then shadow a few phrases. Record yourself and compare one feature, such as sentence stress, rather than trying to copy every feature of the speaker's accent.
Move the phrase into your own answer afterwards. Repeating a clip smoothly is different from using language spontaneously in a new response.
Know when to add outside feedback
If you keep hearing the same problem but cannot explain or fix it, seek focused feedback. An AI report can suggest a practice priority; a qualified teacher can inspect a disputed score or persistent pronunciation issue. Neither a self-rating nor an AI estimate is an official IELTS result.
At the end of the week, record an unrehearsed three-part set. Compare the audio and repeated error patterns, not just time spent practising or one headline score.

Can I improve without a speaking partner?
Yes. Timed answers and careful recording review give you useful practice. Add external feedback when you cannot diagnose or correct a repeated problem.
Does the free browser recorder give a band score?
No. It records and plays back your answer for self-review. AI-scored practice and the Pro web mock are separate features.
How long should I practise each day?
Start with a repeatable 20-minute routine that includes speaking and review. Adjust it to your needs; there is no guaranteed timetable for a band increase.
