Part 2 cue-card response

A few years ago I saved to buy a good pair of running shoes. I run most days and my old shoes were hurting my feet. I wanted shoes that were comfortable and would last longer. To save money I put aside a small amount from my pocket money and also stopped buying snacks at work. I kept the money in my wallet so I could see it growing. After three months I had enough and I bought the shoes at a sports shop. I felt happy and relieved because my feet stopped hurting and I could run further. It was worth waiting and saving.

Progression: Band 6 gives a simple, clear narrative with short sentences and limited detail. Band 7 expands each bullet with concrete examples (price, part-time work, spreadsheet) and connects ideas fluently. Band 8 adds precision, reasoning about specs and career impact, more cohesive linking and controlled complex grammar.

Should schools teach children how to manage money from a young age?

Yes, I think schools should teach children about money. It's useful to learn basics like saving, budgeting and the value of things. If they practise with small amounts or pocket money, they learn faster. That would help them make better decisions when they're older.

Progression: Band 6 states a simple opinion and examples. Band 7 brings practical classroom ideas and consequences. Band 8 argues more strongly, adding structure, pedagogy and long-term benefits.

Should parents teach their children to spend money freely or to save money?

Parents should teach children to save rather than spend freely. Saving helps for things you really need later. But it's okay to let kids spend some money on treats so they learn choice and responsibility.

Progression: Band 6 gives a basic preference for saving. Band 7 recommends a balanced approach with goal-based saving. Band 8 outlines practical allocation strategies and development of autonomy.

Do you think it is easier to teach teenagers how to manage money when they are around 16 or 17 years old?

I think older teens like 16 or 17 can understand money better because they are more mature. They might have part-time jobs and face real expenses so it is easier to teach then. But it's still useful to start earlier with simple lessons.

Progression: Band 6 states a simple view. Band 7 links age to practical opportunities and prior foundation. Band 8 presents a staged educational model and justifies why later practice is effective.

Is it easier to spend money or save money?

It's easier to spend money because you get things straight away. Saving needs patience and you have to resist temptation. Most people find spending is quicker and more tempting.

Progression: Band 6 gives a straightforward contrast. Band 7 explains reasons and suggests simple tools. Band 8 draws on behavioural concepts and proposes specific, evidence-based strategies.

What kind of things do people usually save money for?

People usually save for big things like a house, a car or a holiday. They also save for emergencies, such as unexpected bills or sickness. Some save for education or weddings.

Progression: Band 6 lists typical items. Band 7 organises goals by timeframe and mentions emergency funds. Band 8 categorises motives, includes investments and cultural factors for nuance.

Should people spend time on charity, or just money?

I think both are important. Giving money helps charities buy things they need, but giving time by volunteering also makes a big difference. If you can do both, that's best.

Progression: Band 6 gives a simple balanced opinion. Band 7 distinguishes roles of money and time and suggests mix. Band 8 evaluates comparative advantages and advises when each is preferable.
