パート 2 — 模範解答
Part 2 cue-card response
A few days ago I watched a film at my local cinema. It was an evening show on a Saturday and the place was fairly busy. I went with a friend from university who likes movies as much as I do; we usually meet to watch something once in a while. The story was about a young teacher who moves to a small town and tries to change things there. I picked this film because the trailer looked interesting and people I know had recommended it. I also wanted a quiet night out and thought a film would be relaxing.
A couple of weeks ago I went to see an independent film called 'The Last Light' at a small community cinema near my flat. It was a rainy Tuesday evening, which made the cinema feel cosy and quite full of people who wanted to get out of the weather. I went with a colleague from work who’s also a bit of a film buff; we often swap recommendations and that made the evening feel like a proper mini-event. After the screening we stood outside talking about the ending for nearly half an hour, which showed how engaging it was. The film itself followed a middle-aged woman who returns to her seaside hometown to mend her relationship with a son she hasn’t spoken to for years. It was a slow, character-driven story with quiet humour, vivid seaside images and a few scenes that felt painfully real. I chose to watch it because the trailer hinted at authenticity rather than spectacle, and several friends praised its natural performances; I was curious to see if it would feel true. Also, I needed a break from busy social media and thought a thoughtful, low-key film would be the perfect antidote. The soundtrack, mostly piano and sea sounds, also left a strong impression.
パート 3 — 模範解答
What kinds of movies do you think are successful in your country?
In my country big commercial films do well, especially action and comedy. People like films that are easy to understand and that have familiar faces. Family films and romantic comedies also make good money because lots of people go together. Marketing and a big release date help a lot too.
Successful films here tend to combine popular genres with strong marketing and a release at the right time. For instance, action-packed blockbusters and broad comedies attract large audiences, while historical dramas or romantic films can do very well if they tap into national sentiment. Timing around holidays and smart publicity often determines whether a film becomes a hit or not, so producers plan releases carefully.
Do Chinese people prefer to watch domestic movies or foreign movies?
Many people watch both domestic and foreign films. Big Hollywood films are popular for special effects, but people also enjoy local films that feel familiar. Younger viewers might watch more foreign films online.
There’s a real appetite for both, but domestic films often have the edge because they speak the local language and deal with culturally familiar themes. That said, Hollywood-style tentpoles still pull in big audiences for spectacle and visual effects, especially during holiday periods. Streaming services have also made foreign films more accessible, so viewing habits are quite mixed now.
Do you think only well-known directors can create the best movies?
No, I don’t think only famous directors can make great films. New directors sometimes make excellent movies too. It depends on the story and the team.
No — while established directors bring experience and an audience, many remarkable films come from debut or lesser-known directors who take creative risks. Fresh voices often introduce original ideas and new styles that can feel more exciting than the predictable output of big names. Ultimately, talent, a clear vision and the ability to work well with the cast and crew matter more than reputation alone.
What are the factors that make a successful movie?
Successful movies need a good story and decent actors. Marketing and timing are important too. If a film has great effects or music that also helps.
A successful film usually combines a compelling story, convincing characters and strong production values, but other factors are crucial as well: well-timed release, effective marketing, and word of mouth can turn a good film into a hit. Cultural relevance and emotional resonance also matter — a film that captures the spirit of the moment can outperform technically superior but soulless pictures.
Do you think successful movies should have well-known actors or actresses in leading roles?
Famous actors often help because people recognise them and will watch the film. But sometimes unknown actors give strong performances and the film still does well.
Star power certainly helps with initial box-office returns and publicity, since famous names draw attention and reassure audiences. However, memorable films often feature lesser-known actors who deliver authentic performances and become breakout stars; these casting choices can make a picture feel more believable and sometimes even more successful in the long term.
Why do people prefer to watch movies in the cinema?
People go to the cinema because the screen is big and the sound is better. It’s also an outing with friends or family. Watching at home is easier but the cinema feels special.
Going to the cinema remains popular because it offers an immersive, communal experience you rarely get at home: the larger screen, powerful sound system and darkness create full immersion. There’s also a social element — people enjoy sharing reactions and making a night of it — and the cinema experience feels like an event, which streaming at home generally can’t replicate.
