Part 2 cue-card response
I want to talk about a time I worked in a group to organise a small charity bake sale at my university. I helped with baking and selling cakes on the day. I worked with three other students from a campus society — two friends and one classmate. We had some problems with timing because everyone had different classes, so it was hard to decide when to meet. Also, some people's cakes didn't look the same so we had to arrange them carefully. We worked as a group because the event was too big for one person and we needed different skills: someone to bake, someone to handle money and someone to tell people about it. In the end the teamwork made the event easier and more fun.
I'd like to describe a time I worked in a group to organise a charity bake sale at university. I was mainly responsible for coordinating logistics and budgeting, and I arranged a stall on the student union terrace. To be specific, I booked the space, liaised with the student union office for permissions, and drew up a rota for volunteers so everyone knew when to be there. I worked with four other students from my environmental society: two bakers, a treasurer and a publicity officer. One of them was a final-year student who taught me how to price items and estimate demand, which was very useful. We faced a few problems, mainly clashing schedules and different standards for presentation — some people preferred homemade rustic cakes while others wanted neat commercial-style packaging. For example, we had to compromise on labels and packaging so everything looked coherent on the day. We worked in a group because the scale of the event would have been impossible alone, and because we needed a variety of skills: baking, money-handling, publicity and logistics. Working together also made the event more enjoyable and helped us attract a wider range of customers, which meant we raised more money for the charity. In the end we raised about £450 for a local food bank, which exceeded our modest target. I also learned practical skills, like writing shopping lists for ingredients and negotiating with a supplier to get discount packs of flour.
3부 - 모델 답변
Why do some people prefer to work by themselves?
Some people prefer to work by themselves because it's easier to concentrate and make quick decisions. They don't have to wait for others or argue about ideas. Also, some people feel more comfortable taking responsibility alone.
Many people opt to work alone because they find it more efficient and less emotionally draining — especially introverts who get distracted by group dynamics. Working solo avoids negotiation over ideas and deadlines, and it can mean clearer accountability for the outcome. For example, freelancers often prefer solitary work because it suits their routines and reduces conflict.
What should a leader do to make team members want to follow him or her?
A leader should give clear instructions and organise the team. They should listen to others and make fair decisions. It's important they encourage people to take part.
A good leader sets a clear vision and explains how each person contributes, but they also inspire trust by listening and supporting team members. They delegate sensible tasks, provide constructive feedback and deal with conflict calmly so people feel safe to follow them. Leading by example and recognising effort are key to motivating a team.
Should students learn to do group work?
Yes, students should learn to do group work because it helps them share ideas and finish bigger tasks. It prepares them for jobs where teamwork is needed. It also helps with speaking and listening skills.
Absolutely — group work is a vital part of education because it develops communication, negotiation and project-management skills that you won't get from solo tasks alone. That said, schools should teach how to work in teams and assess both group and individual contributions, so students learn collaboration fairly. When managed well, group projects mirror real-world work and boost employability.
What group tasks are there in schools?
In schools students do group presentations, science experiments in teams, and class projects. There are also sports teams and drama productions where students work together. Teachers often set group homework or poster tasks.
Schools use a range of group tasks: collaborative projects and presentations, laboratory work in science, debates, peer-review sessions and community-service projects. Extra-curricular activities like sports teams, theatre productions and debating societies also demand teamwork. These tasks vary in length and complexity, giving students repeated chances to practise different roles within a group.
What advantages are there for students experiencing teamwork at school?
Teamwork at school helps students learn to communicate and share work. They also learn to respect others and make friends. It can make big tasks easier to manage.
Experiencing teamwork at school teaches practical soft skills like communication, conflict resolution and leadership, which are invaluable later on. It also improves problem-solving, because students combine different strengths to reach better solutions, and it increases adaptability — students learn to work with people from different backgrounds. Employers often look for evidence of these team skills on CVs.
How can you tell if a person is a good leader?
You can tell a good leader because people listen to them and respect their choices. They make decisions and keep the group organised. A good leader also helps when things go wrong.
A good leader is clear and consistent: they communicate expectations, make timely decisions and remain calm under pressure, which builds confidence in the team. You can also judge them by how they treat others — a strong leader gives credit, supports development and handles mistakes constructively rather than blaming people. Ultimately, their team performs well and feels motivated.
