Young people mostly watch online videos, quick dramas, reality shows and comedy. They like things that move fast and are easy to share. Older people often prefer news, traditional dramas, documentaries or soaps and they watch at set times. The difference comes from habits and the devices people use; young people use phones more.

There are a few clear differences. Younger viewers favour fast-paced content and formats made for social media or streaming — short series, reality competition shows, clips on apps — and they often prefer programmes that let them interact, like voting or commenting. Older audiences typically stick with scheduled TV: evening news, long-running dramas or documentary series; they value depth and continuity. Technology and life stage play a part too: younger people grew up with on-demand viewing, while older viewers may be used to appointment-to-watch habits and familiar presenters.

Differences largely reflect life stage, media habits and how content is produced. Younger audiences gravitate to snackable, algorithm-driven content — short clips, serialized shows on streaming platforms, and formats with strong social hooks — because these fit mobile lifestyles and the desire for immediacy and community. Older viewers often prefer longer-form, curated television such as in-depth documentaries, current-affairs programmes or classic dramas that offer context and continuity. That said, the gap is narrowing: many older people now use streaming services, and certain high-quality dramas or factual series attract mixed-age audiences when they resonate culturally.

A popular show usually has a good story, interesting people or a funny host. Good pictures and sound help. If people talk about it a lot online it becomes more popular. Also shows that are easy to find on phones or TVs get more viewers.

Several things make a programme popular. First, a strong hook — a memorable character, idea or opening — that keeps people watching. Second, shareability: if viewers can easily clip, quote or discuss it on social media it spreads faster. Production values, a charismatic presenter and sensible episode length help too. Finally, timing and marketing matter: a show that arrives at the right moment or taps into a current conversation can take off quickly.

Popularity arises from a mix of narrative, distribution and cultural resonance. A programme needs an emotional hook or compelling premise, well-crafted pacing and distinctive characters or personalities that viewers invest in. But in the online era distribution is equally crucial: platform algorithms, ease of sharing and multi-platform presence amplify reach. Cultural relevance — addressing themes people care about, or offering escapism at the right moment — turns a well-made show into a phenomenon. Community engagement, such as live interaction or fan content, then sustains longevity.

In my country people like dramas, reality shows, news and sports. Soap operas and cooking shows are common. Live sports get very big audiences. Short videos on apps are becoming more popular with young people.

A range of programmes are popular. Traditional favourites like evening soaps and national news still draw steady audiences, while reality formats — talent contests and documentary-style shows about ordinary lives — attract younger viewers. Sports broadcasts command very large audiences for big events. And increasingly short-form video and streaming drama series are changing viewing habits, especially among urban viewers who prefer on-demand access.

There’s a diverse mix: mainstream linear TV remains strong for news, national dramas and live sport, which generate mass viewership and advertising revenue. Concurrently, streaming platforms have introduced internationally produced dramas and local adaptations that are extremely popular, particularly with younger and bilingual audiences. Reality formats and factual entertainment continue to perform well because they’re easy to localise, while short-form content on mobile apps captures attention spans and fosters user-generated spin-offs. The media landscape is therefore hybrid — appointment TV survives for major live events, but everyday viewing increasingly shifts online.
