What's your favourite animal? Why?
My favourite animal is the dog. I like dogs because they are friendly and loyal. I grew up with a family dog and we used to walk together in the park. Dogs are easy to play with and they make you feel happy. I also like that they can learn tricks and keep company.
I'd say dogs are my favourite animals. They are not only affectionate but also very attuned to people's moods, so they make great companions when you're stressed or lonely. I've always admired how trainable they are — with patience you can teach them useful commands and tricks, which creates a real bond. Even on busy days, a short walk with a dog can lift your mood and get you outside, which I think is a big advantage.
Where do you prefer to keep your pet, indoors or outdoors?
I prefer keeping a pet indoors most of the time. Indoors is safer, especially in bad weather. If a pet can go outside sometimes for exercise, that is good, but I like them to sleep and eat inside with the family. It feels safer and cleaner.
I generally prefer pets to be kept primarily indoors, especially if you live in an urban flat. Indoors they are safer from traffic, predators and extreme weather, and it's easier to monitor their health and diet. That said, I think a balance is ideal — access to a secure garden or regular walks allows them to stretch their legs and socialise. For many pets, enriched indoor life plus outdoor time works best.
Have you ever had a pet before?
Yes, I've had pets before. When I was a child we had a cat called Miso. She was small and brown and liked sleeping on my bed. Later I also had a goldfish at school. Looking after pets taught me to be responsible. I enjoyed playing with them and feeding them every day.
Yes — I've had a few pets over the years. As a child I had a cat called Miso who was very affectionate and taught me about routine and responsibility, like feeding and cleaning her litter. In my teens I kept a couple of budgies and a goldfish; they were less hands-on but still required regular care. Having pets taught me patience and how to plan my day around another living being, which was surprisingly useful later when I moved into shared housing.
What is the most popular animal in China?
I think dogs are the most popular animal in China. Many families keep dogs as pets for companionship. Cats are popular too, but dogs seem to be more common in homes and outside in parks and streets.
Traditionally dogs have been the most popular pets in China, and you still see many households with them, especially in suburban and rural areas. However, in recent years cats have become increasingly fashionable among younger people living in cities, partly because they're easier to keep in small apartments. Other animals like fish or small birds are common too, but the dog-versus-cat trend is the most noticeable shift at the moment.
