ChatGPT or IELTSpeaking for Speaking Practice?

Start with the job you need done. If you want ideas, explanations or flexible follow-up questions, try your existing ChatGPT access first. If you want IELTSpeaking's fixed mock-test workflow and saved reports, inspect the sample and Pro requirements before subscribing.

This is a workflow comparison, not a claim that one AI scores more accurately. ChatGPT features and limits depend on the current product and account. Both AI-generated feedback and IELTSpeaking scores need checking against your own answers.

Use ChatGPT for a focused rehearsal

Ask for one question at a time and a follow-up that responds to your answer. For a text-only session, use feedback on ideas, grammar and wording; do not accept pronunciation claims without audio evidence. If voice conversation is available in your account, check the current controls and limits before practising.

Try this prompt: Ask me one IELTS-style Part 3 question at a time. Wait for my answer, ask one relevant follow-up, then identify one unclear idea and one language pattern to practise. Quote my words as evidence. Do not invent a pronunciation score from text.

Use IELTSpeaking for a repeatable test workflow

The realtime web mock packages a three-part AI examiner session and a practice report linked to your account. It requires Apple sign-in and Pro. Public topic recording is a separate free option for listening back without AI scoring.

Choose it if the organised workflow helps you practise consistently and the sample feedback matches your needs. A dedicated interface alone is not evidence of a smaller scoring error.

Compare both on the same task

Keep a teacher available for unresolved questions

For persistent pronunciation problems or an unexplained gap between estimated bands, take a recording and specific questions to a qualified teacher. A generic AI score should not decide when you are ready for an expensive official test.

FAQ

Do I need a paid app if I already use ChatGPT?

Not necessarily. Try a focused rehearsal with your existing tools. Consider paid structured practice if its workflow and feedback solve a problem you can identify.

Is this an independent accuracy benchmark?

No. IELTSpeaking publishes this workflow comparison. No head-to-head scoring study is claimed.
